Checkerboard is a small family ran restaurant with large portions and low cost. With that being said, it is not a 5 star establishment. My husband, a good friend and I enjoy going there because its not only comfortable, but the food is rather tasty. The service is hit or miss like most other dinners, it varies based on how busy they are. The waitress can be a little "flaky" at times, but she always seems to have good intentions when she is talking to you. Occationally the flood can be a little sticky, but the dinning room is far from dirty. Just well worn in.
Avoid the perch as it seems like something out of a box, deep fried. Gyros are simple but yummy. Their breakfast is huge! and the crowning glory as far as I am concerned is their burgers. Home made, seasoned perfectly, and just the right size.

We tried this restaurant for breakfast based on the reviews from this website. We were very dissapointed in the food, service and overall quality of the establishment. The floors and tables were dirty and the benches were peeling. Granted you will get a cheap breakfast, but in my opinion it is not worth the trip.
I went there in March 2011, and there were a few issues i noticed. For one, the waitress we got was very rude. Although we did notice that she was friendly to other customers who were obviously regulars. She acted as though we (A First, and last time customer) were an annoyance and a bother to her. Second of all, some of the food we received was burnt and some was undercooked. Thirdly, When we called to speak with a manager, and they did not seem willing to give us a time or date of when a manager will be around. Lastly, the waitress was speaking quite loudly about her criminal offenses which is not something that a customer wants to hear. Overall, i am NOT impressed with how this business is run and how they deal with their customers, especially new ones. Without a doubt i will NOT be returning to that restaurant and i WILL advise others to do the same.
Went for breakfast after seeing the great reviews and were not let down at all :). It's a typical family run diner - good food, lots of it and great people running it. Had two big breakfasts, which we each shared with one of the kids and our oldest had the ham and eggs. Food was well cooked, flavourable and abundant. A couple of minor irritants - had to chase the waitress for coffee refills ( in fairness, it was busy) and they do not take debit, so make sure you have some cash on hand.
Me and my girlfriend visit this quaint little breakfast establishment frequently now. It is a hidden gem.
The service is amazing being family run. They dont hound you or overpower with service so it is easy to have a lovely breakfast without disturbances. You walk in and seat yourself, and you seemingly have a very large sense of freedom that's friendly and warm.
The food is prepared quickly, you can see them working away in the back. They have almost anything you would crave for breakfast at very affordable prices. The meals are of large size and are very good in taste.
I must say we are heavy eaters. We love our breakfast good tasting, heavy, and cheap. Checkerboard is all of that with a little bit of comfort.
We ordered: French Toast meal / side of sausage / cheddar omlette meal / two large chocolate milks.
Very impressive. Since we found this place its hard to steer away anywhere else for breakfast.

This little family run restaurant has great breakfasts, friendly service and lots of character. It's clean and bright and full of regulars. Love, love, love it. I'll keep going back most definitely.

My friends and I always go there after we finish our shift at 7am. It's become a tradition of sorts. The cook knows us and the staff is friendly. Not a professional establishment, it's a family owned and run restaurant, which is i nice.
Food is always fantastic, except the spices on the home fries are sometimes lacking. Portions are more than enough.
Overall, it's a pleasant atmosphere. Can't wait to go again.

It's alright, but nothing out of this world. I ordered the chicken souvlaki and it was the standard taste and appearance one can get anywhere else. It's clean and cozy (nicer on the interior than on the exterior) and the waitress was friendly.
Was passing buy and heard about this diner...Looked around found a sit..Took the waitress, who looked like she didnt even want to be there, to serve me about 15 min later....Another about 20 mon later my food arrived,COLD!Helping was all right but just the disdain and attitude of my very poorly lacking in professionlism of my waitress was enough to turn me OFF!
