When you want to open a business, the easiest thing to do is take over an existing building and renovate it to suit your vision. But for Catherine Smith and Brett Barnett, co-owners of 1847 Wine and Beer Bistro, they took it one step further. The pair didn’t want to settle for just any building, and bought what used to be Brooklin’s original bank and hardware store, turning it into the chicest gathering spot in northern Whitby.
“They’re heritage buildings and we renovated them,” explains Catherine. “The original bank and hardware store were built in 1890. There are signatures on the bank vault door dating back to when the Bank of Commerce bought the existing bank in 1914.”
To return the bank side to its original beauty, a tin ceiling was installed. The hardware store was left more rustic, with exposed brick and beam throughout. Catherine and Brett also take pride in the bar and coffee tables, which were all constructed by the Amish. The result is a bistro that’s charming, elegant and sophisticated, and it fits right in with the up-and-coming trendiness of Brooklin. “We knew this was a place where we could stay for the long-term,” says Catherine. “…Brooklin’s a young town with the demographic we were looking for, and we know that it’s growing rapidly.”
Totally disappointed. Ordered a pint of Muskoka cream ale ... that's hard to mess up. As for the $31 steak dinner?? Burned to a black char colour, sooo tough couldn't even cut through parts, and asked for medium and the centre was rare in places. This place is trying to look like it's TO quality but is anything but. I can (and have) made better steaks myself. Micro beers are all they have on tap, with domestics prices way too high. Won't be going back here anytime soon. Waitress returned to our table once the whole evening.... didn't ask how our meal was... and spoke in a somewhat condescending tone when we asked about details about the menu. :(
Nice ambience, food quality was good overall, portions were rather small and a tad pricey. Ordered three different beers to get one pint, they were sold out of the first two.
