Best Mexican Restaurant in the Horseshoe area by far!

When you have a craving for Mexican Food folks this is the place to go! By far this is the best Mexican food you'll have from Toronto to Buffalo. There's not one Mexican restaurant that serves beef barbacoa as good as Mex-i-Can. This restaurant even have full choices on menu for vegans, and gluten free choices for those with celiac disease. The beef barbacoa burritos are amazing and if you're really hungry order the super burrito. The atmosphere is like a sitting in one of Mexico's open square eateries off the beaten tourist trap tracks. Don't expect anything fancy but expect great food, warm and friendly service reminiscent of being in Mexico- without playing airfare. I highly recommend this restaurant! I'm planning on booking this location for a future fiesta/party with 20 of my friends! I know we'll have a blast.

Mex-I-Can-Continues to Wow

A tried and true restaurant whose main feature has always been its outstanding, authentic, and made-with-love quality of Mexican home-cooking. To begin, we were brought a basket of home-made nacho chips with a selection of house-made salsas; one mild, one "picante." As a "tortillera" (tortilla shop), Mex-I-Can produces their own corn and flour tortillas from scratch, and fries the chips up to order. I love the authentic selection of Mexican pops; they remind me of traipsing around Tijuana as a teenager, eating street food and exploring the city. I always order the Cidral, the apple-flavoured soda, or a Tamarind-flavoured Jarrito. The service was genuine and well-informed. First of all, the waitstaff helpfully suggested the chicken tostadas for my friend, who is on a special diet avoiding wheat and some types of dairy. These came with a chickpea-based "sour cream" and feta cheese to accomodate her. These were crispy, freshly made corn layers smothered in slow-cooked chicken, lettuce, and pico de gallo sauce. My main, an order of beef barbacoa tacos, included two plump tacos filled with an ancho-chile braised beef mixture, topped with salsa verde, fresh cheese, and cilantro, with mexican rice, refried beans, and more nachos on the side. The owners are very good at ensuring that every customer is satisfied, and will accomodate special meal requests, including gluten and dairy sensitivies, and vegetarian and vegan options. Mex-I-Can continues to wow us, and has been a delightful spot to take out-of-town guests looking for authentic Mexican food. This, of course, assumes that you are not armed with the prententiousness of wishing that James Street North was Leslieville, or some other extension of the 'burbs.

Great little gem of a restaurant

This restaurant is a neat and fun place to dine. The food is authentic, creative, and the flavors are simply wonderful. I had a pancake stuffed with chorizo, which was delicious, also tried their quesadillas , shared an enchilada, and for dessert we had a deep fried cheese cake wrapped in Phylo. Everything was very nicely prepared and very yummy. We also ordered a bottle of wine. Our server recommended some wonderful dishes which we really enjoyed. The atmosphere is fun and have been several times. The restaurant is a bit kiche in design, and the service is not always the fastest, but it is well worth the wait. It is always busy when ever I have gone, and have recommended this place to many friends. I wish there were more restauants in the area that served this quality and flavorful food in such a unique way at these prices. Better than some of the Mexican food I have had in Miami. ***This restaurant is also good for those with Wheat Allergies as they have products that are gluten free that taste great and are tender!!!! For those who have wheat allergies, you will really appreciate this spot!

calling health and safety...

had heard AMAZING things about this place so we decided to check it out.. our waiter didn't speak a lick of english, he just stood there beside you until you pointed out who the meal was for! there were items on the menu (a printed off piece of paper in a duo-tang like plastic covering) that weren't being offered..that day or ever, we weren't sure as the waiter moreso gestured then anything. the food wasn't even luke warm, nachos were stale as cardboard and the place itself was disgusting!! it was SO incredibly dusty, there wasn't a visible sign so we weren't even sure it WAS a restaurant and the bathrooms? OMG i've never seen anything so nasty!! Over all this place needs to have a health and safety inspector there pronto! oh, and they didn't offer sangrias on the menu..you could get champagne coke(??) and shots of tequila....or warm coke in a dusty can. Every aspect of our visit was a disappointment.

Loved it!

Went there with my husband...absolutely loved it. We wouldn't have walked in there had we just walked past it BUT wow...what a great place! Feels like you're visiting a small town in Mexico :) Food was great...very very authentic. Service was great, very friendly staff... and the wait....it wasn't bad at all. Jarritos (drink)...so yummy just don't look at the label :) calories...who cares? We will definately be going back :) I want to try everything on the menu. Enjoy!
